Minecraft Bedrock servers: play on mobile, Windows and console

Minecraft Bedrock or Java, what is the difference for servers? How to find a server compatible with mobile, Windows or console, and join it.

Updated on

Minecraft comes in two editions, which do not connect to the same servers by default. Here is how to find a server compatible with your device.

Java or Bedrock: which edition do you have?

  • Java Edition: the PC version (Windows, macOS, Linux), started from the Minecraft launcher. It is the edition with the most servers.
  • Bedrock Edition: the mobile version (Android, iPhone), Windows (Microsoft Store), Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.

On a Windows PC, you can have both: look at the game's name in the launcher (“Java Edition” or “Bedrock”).

Find a compatible server

  • Bedrock servers: built for Bedrock.
  • Cross-play servers: they accept Java and Bedrock (often thanks to the Geyser plugin). Ideal for playing with friends on PC while you are on mobile.

On each server page, the edition and version are shown under the server's name.

Join a server on Bedrock

  1. Copy the server address from its page (and note the port, 19132 by default).
  2. In Minecraft: Play → Servers → Add Server.
  3. Enter a name, the address and the port, then join.

On console (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch), adding an external server is not always offered directly: many servers explain a way to connect on their Discord.

Common problems

  • The server does not show up or refuses the connection: check that it really is a Bedrock or cross-play server, and that the port is correct.
  • “Outdated version”: update Minecraft from your device's store.
  • Account: a Microsoft account is required to play online.
